Water conservation is something we should all be doing no matter where we are. Many of us in the more moisture prone areas of the country typically take water and our vast water supply of it for granted. The reality is that when only 2% of the world’s water supply can actually be consumed by humans it sounds a little scarier. With water demand at an all-time high we need to take a closer look at ways we as individuals can start making better choices about how we conserve this precious resource. By conserving water, you can help supply more water while bringing a multitude of benefits your way.
Let’s take a look at the top ten easy ways we can each make small impacts to our water conservation efforts.
Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. This is one we have heard over and over again but if each of us makes this small contribution it can have an enormous overall impact.
Check for leaks. Even the smallest leak can cause an excessive amount of extra water usage and cost you more money when the bill arrives
Invest in energy efficient appliances. This can include washing machines, toilets, dishwashers and hot water heaters.
When washing clothes, make sure that you are washing full loads of laundry only. You are wasting a lot of water washing only half of a load.
Take shorter showers. You would be surprised at that just a few minutes off your shower time could reduce the amount of water you are using greatly.
When watering the lawn ensure that the sprinkler system is set the right way so you are not watering the gutters and watering other things that you do not want to water.
Use a layer of mulch around your plants and they will retain moisture for a longer time period. Plus, it looks good and keeps weeds at bay.
Use the car wash to wash your vehicle. We tend to use more water when we wash our cars at home.
Do full loads of laundry. Partial loads waste a lot of water. Don’t run the washer until you have full load of laundry to wash.
TEACH OTHERS! Teach everyone how to conserve water and help them do it. If we all make minor changes in our daily lives we can make a huge difference!
